Beginning Teachers - Teaching Reading One Day Workshop

This day specifically focuses on supporting beginning teachers in implementing a consistent structured approach to improving the reading of all students in their classroom. A whole - part - whole approach to the teaching of reading is advocated using a continuum of support with the instructional approaches of Modelled, Shared and Guided Reading. All approaches are modelled in a very practical way and ideas and information are shared with regard to managing the classroom learning environment.

Content Overview

Understanding the Reading Process:

• A very practical approach to understanding the three cueing systems
• A toolkit of successful researched prompts for supporting readers.
• Assessment - Running Record of Reading and the three levels of analysis

The Instructional Approaches

• A scaffolded approach - Reading to, Reading with, Reading by
• Applying new understandings of the reading process to teaching using the instructional approaches of Shared and Guided Reading
• A particular emphasis on Guided Reading and modelling of the approach across all primary year levels

Managing the Learning Environment

• The organisation, management and implementation of a reading block
• The organisation and management of small groups of students for Guided Reading
• Ideas for independent literacy learning activities at all levels
• Action planning
