Task Cards - Years 2 & 3

Task cards are an independent learning activity. They are simply tasks on cards that are responses to reading a text. A teacher needs to take a small group guided reading lesson at least once or twice daily and the question always asked is "What are the rest of the class doing?" These task cards can be used in conjunction with other purposeful activities. They are far more meaningful and engaging to students than filling out a sheet of paper!

To have success with the task cards and to ensure there is learning taking place students need to be using texts that are matched to their ability to read independently. The task cards are generic and are used by all students. The level of the activity is different for all students according to the text that has been read before responding to it with a task. Make sure you have a Book Box of texts for each ability group in the class. The students choose a text from their book box and respond with a task card.

Task cards can also be a response to a text that has been read or shared with the whole class. Make available a few task cards at a time so the students have some choice. Download the cards, back them with a nice coloured edge and laminate. They will be yours forever. Enjoy!
