Magic Words Resource Afternoon Workshop
'Being able to read many words automatically by sight contributes massively to fluent reading and is the most efficient way to unlock the meaning of text' (Westwood P.S. 2001).
Magic Words is a Learning Centre Resource of high-frequency words to:
- Improve reading and writing skills
- Increase fluency
- Develop comprehension rapidly
This workshop encourages teachers to value the specific and consistent teaching and learning of high frequency words as one of the most efficient ways to support students to code-break texts. Participants will work with the resource which consists of playing cards and a resource manual full of ideas for literacy centre activities. They will understand the links between this resource and accelerated learning and they will have fun!
Content Overview
This workshop involves participants in a discussion of the following:
'Magic Words make up on average one half of the words used in reading'.
'Engaging both hemispheres of the brain simultaneously has been shown to
greatly accelerate learning'.
What the research says ... (cognitive theory and brain research)
'We need to promote automaticity with the recognition of high frequency
words'.
The number of times students may need to see a word before automaticity
is achieved.
This resource caters to the three learning styles.
How to play and what to play!
How to manage a small group learning environment.
Having fun!
