Early Phase Reading (P-3) Two Day Workshop
This course is specifically designed for Teacher Aides who work with students in the first four years of schooling but is also recognised as strong professional development for teacher aides working across all primary grades. Teacher Aides will have a better understanding of the reading process and how to apply this knowledge in guided reading with small groups and in one on one intervention programs at the end of this course.Course Overview
DAY ONE:
The Role of the Teacher Aide and their valued contribution to improving learning outcomes for students.
Understanding the Reading Process: A very practical approach to understanding the
cueing systems and how to support students to access all three
sources of information in order to have success when reading.
Pause, Prompt, Praise strategy.
A toolkit of successful researched prompts for supporting
readers is delivered.
The Instructional Approaches (Early Phase)
A continuum model of support- Reading to, Reading with, Reading by
Extensive modelling of working with a small group or
one on one using modelled, shared or a guided
reading instructional approach and understanding the various
levels of support.
The magic of knowing high frequency words and the importance
of these words to being a successful
code breaker and text participant.
Consolidation of day one in a small group activity
Revisiting
or a first introduction to the conventions for taking a running
record of reading.
The three levels of analysis are
studied in order to further understandings of the reading process
and to support Teacher Aides in their decision making when
working with students.
Working with reading strategies
that will enhance a readers ability to access texts
(Many teacher aides work across all primary levels and therefore some time is given in this course to working with older students. A more comprehensive approach to working with middle years students is available in the next course)

Modelling of

a guided reading instructional approach and understanding the various
levels of support.
Enhancing Oral Language using the felt story
A
practical resource for use and application in the classroom
Certificate is presented on completion of the course
