Supporting Grammar and Spelling (P-7) One Day Workshop

This day builds on the ‘Supporting Young Writers P-9 Workshop’. The focus is on supporting Teacher Aides in their understanding of the roles of grammar and spelling in strengthening writing. Participants are introduced to the grammar features of various text types and review the generic structure, purpose and language features. The developmental stages of writing and spelling are examined in order to more fully support students with their writing at their point of need. Strategies are discussed in developing student success in grammar and spelling to improve the confidence and abilities of student writers.

Content Overview

Features, including grammar of Text Types

• Review of the purpose, structure and language features of the various text types.
• Introduction of grammar features of the various text types.
• Grammar & punctuation conventions.

Spelling and Writing Development

• Introduction to the stages in the Spelling and Writing Developmental Continuums.
• Characteristics of spellers in the 5 stages and implications for supporting students within their developmental levels.

Spelling Awareness

• Phonological and Phonemic Awareness – Supporting students with recognition of sounds in words and knowledge of sound/ letter relationships.
• Phonics – Supporting students to recognise a consistent relationship between sounds & letters.

• Word Study – Dual purpose:
a) General – To discover the regularities, patterns & conventions of English orthography (correct sequences of letters in the writing system); and
b) Specific – To increase specific knowledge of the spelling and meaning of individual words.

Supporting Student Success in Grammar & Spelling

• Using the Instructional Approaches of modelled, shared and interactive writing to support success in grammar and spelling
• Using the Revising processes of editing and proofreading to improve students’ writing
• Grammar Games
