Writing Workshops
Supporting Young Writers (P-9) One Day Workshop
Teacher Aides are required to work with student writers in small groups and with one on one conferencing. The Writing Workshop specifically focuses on supporting Teacher Aides to understand all aspects of the writing process and the authorial and secretarial roles of the writer. Participants study the generic structure, purpose and language features of various text types in order to be able to more fully support the students with their writing.
Content Overview
Features of Various Text Types:
A practical 'hands on' approach to understanding the
purpose, structure and language features of the various text types.
Discovering the variety of text types and their many forms
Teacher aides will be introduced to the aspects of the writing process and the secretarial and authorial roles of the writer
Planning for Writing - Supporting students
to plan their writing. Considering purpose, audience and text
type. Using planning proformas to support struggling writers.
Composing - Supporting students with composing
through conversation, clarification of thoughts, ideas and demonstration.
Revising - supporting students to improve and enhance
the clarity and fluency of text to meet the intended purpose. Understanding revising
is authorial and secretarial and linking this to conferencing students work.
Recording - Supporting students with correct spelling
and grammar choices.
Publishing -Discussions re - presentation and considering
needs of the audience
Supporting Reluctant Writers:
A continuum of support for working with writers either one
on one or in small groups
Teacher aides will be introduced to modelled, shared and interactive writing
and the necessity for a different approach depending on the needs of the
students
Strategies/ideas for engaging writers
Supporting the Teacher Aides to improve their understandings of the conventions for using punctuation correctly to enhance their conferencing ability.
