Practical Strategies for Working with ASD Students
This workshop aims to equip teachers with knowledge and skills so that they can be more effective in the teaching of students diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder included in the regular Primary or Secondary School classroom.
Content Overview
Definitions and the major areas of need will be explored –What is Autistic Spectrum disorder?
Why is its incidence increasing?
How can the classroom teacher manage a student with specific needs in the areas of:
• social interaction
• flexibility in thinking
• communication and sensory information processing.
Practical strategies in each of these areas will be shared. Case studies of success drawn from the presenter’s practice will demonstrate the success of these strategies.
Classroom Support and Behaviour Management
A range of options for classroom support and behaviour management will be shared.
The playground will be seen through the eyes of the ASD student and practical ideas for its access and management will be shared.
Crisis Management
Participants will explore the implications of a crisis, how to manage it and how to prevent the next one.
