Assessment of Reading (4-9) Afternoon Workshop

This two hour workshop specifically focuses on supporting Middle Years teachers in implementing successful tools for the assessment of reading and comprehension. More specifically this workshop will support teachers' understandings and use of the following assessment tools:

• T.O.R.C.H - Teaching of Reading Comprehension.
• Running Records of Reading - Informal Prose Inventory and PM Benchmark Kit.

Content Overview

What can we assess in reading?
The variety of tools available for the assessment of reading.

T.O.R.C.H. Teaching of Reading Comprehension A.C.E.R.

•  Investigating the T.O.R.C.H.
•  Advising and training for the administration of the test.
•  Selection of appropriate tests for year levels.
•  Methods to identify at risk students.
•  Interpretation of results.

Informal Prose Inventory, Handy Resources N.Z.

•  Investigating using running records of reading with at risk students.
•  The three levels of analysis of running records of reading.

Classroom Application

•  Interpreting test findings into guided reading practice.
•  A focus on reading strategies to improve students' reading performances.
