Improving Students' Writing Using Functional Grammar 5-9
This workshop aims to enhance Teachers understandings of Functional Grammar in order to provide them with the necessary tools to improve their students’ writing on many levels. The grammar is introduced as per Essential Learnings and gives teachers the explicit language to use as they support students in becoming better writers.
It is assumed that teachers attending already have a working knowledge of participants, processes and circumstances.
Content Overview
The cultural model of language
Register - How to improve students' writing by analyzing for depth of knowledge (field); power relationships (tenor) and the "writtenness" of the text (mode)
Nominalisation. Being able to turn any part of speech in to a noun gives the writer greater control of their writing and of their audience.
Theme and hypertheme considers the structure of non fiction text and how it can be improved.
Attitudinal lexus - how writers choose their words indicates their world view and signals how they are manipulating their audience.
Practical strategies will be introduced and practised.
Participants should come prepared to take notes and to do activities which enhance understanding. Please bring red, green and blue pencils or highlighters.
