Developing Literacy Skills in the Early Years Prep & Year 1
This interactive workshop offers teachers working in Prep &Year One classrooms a ‘hands on’, practical professional learning experience and a wonderful networking /sharing opportunity. Current research shows that the transition from ‘pre-school’ settings to a school environment could be the most important educational transition of all. In the Early Years teachers are setting up foundations for future interactions with formalised education. It is vital for Early Years teachers ‘to get the Literacy Foundations right’.
Content Overview
The main objective of the activities included in this workshop is to assist our youngest learners to enjoy and develop confidence in their ‘Literacy Abilities’.
Participants will:
- Consider strategies to enhance the development of Literacy skills within a Play/Inquiry based
curriculum, the Early Years Curriculum Guidelines. - Consider how to ‘differentiate’ within the Early Learning Area of Language Learning and
Communication to cater for the developmental stages of children, - Explore how to bring Literacy to each of the five contexts for learning
- Consider how to use classroom experiences to facilitate Literacy development.
- Consider strategies for developing early understandings of print concepts and supporting
beginning readers and writers. - Be introduced to a range of ‘tools’ that can be used by teachers to develop their student’s
Literacy understandings.
