Phonological Awareness for Prep & Yr 1
This interactive workshop offers teachers working in Prep &Year One classrooms a ‘hands on’,
practical professional learning experience and an opportunity to build their knowledge and
understanding of implementing a focused and consistent approach to implementing Phonological
Awareness – a prerequisite to learning to read and write.
Content Overview
Teachers will participate in activities that involve the oral component of language, not the written.
Teachers will investigate with the facilitator the following:
Metalinguistic Awareness
The ability to think and talk about language - its form not meaning.
- Concepts About Print
Phonological Awareness
The ability to focus on the way that words sound
A teaching sequence - from the unknown to creation
- Rhyme
- Allliteration
- Sentence Segmentation
- Syllables
- Onset/Rime
Phonemic Awareness
The ability to attend to the phonemes in words
Letter Names and Shapes
To acquire knowledge about letters and how they work
Small group Implementation
Task management board - four terms for implementation of all of the above
