Content Overview

The ultimate goal of any reading instruction is to create confident, fluent problem solving students who read texts accurately whilst understanding what the text is saying and who is saying it. Readers need to know a range of strategies to enhance their accuracy and understanding, also how to acquire information and remember what they read.

This workshop will focus on the teaching of comprehension skills. Teachers will investigate practical ways to develop the strategies of comprehension and the levels of comprehension questioning.

  • Three levels of questioning - Literal, Inferential, Evaluative
  • A variety of comprehension strategies eg. Skim/Scan, Summarising, Inferring, Clarifying, Synthesising, QAR

Successful readers need to look at written, visual and spoken texts to question the attitudes and values that lie beneath the surface.

This workshop will also focus on the teaching of critical analysis skills including identifying ways text are crafted.

Many practical and useful teaching suggestions are offered in this workshop to assist teachers in the explicit teaching of reading.
