Content Overview
Think! Damn It! - Module 1: This hands-on, challenging and engaging workshop introduces P-7 teachers to a selection of thinking strategies and tools that will help them create ‘a thoughtful future’ for their students [and themselves] by:
Creating a Climate for Thinking – Teaching for Thinking
- Thinking About Brain Facts – an introduction to the brain and how it learns ‘best’
- Promoting Thinking in the Primary Years – questions that need to be asked
Using and Understanding Explicit Strategies – Teaching of Thinking
- Strategies that enhance recall – using cognitive strategies in a cooperative way in the primary classroom
- Scaffolding Higher-Order Thinking in P - 7 students – Analysis, Decision Making, Creativity
- Selected Cognitive Strategies - RAS Alert, Icon Prompt, Image Associated Ideas (Picture Strategy), PCQ, Decision Making Matrix
Encouraging Co-operative Interactions – Teaching with Thinking
- Making explicit the what, how, why and when of Cooperative strategies that work: See-Saw Pairs, Human Bingo, Round Robin, Hot Potato, Silent Card Shuffle
The Instructional Approaches
The facilitator will ‘walk the talk’ by:
- modelling a range of cognitive and cooperative strategies / tools
- making explicit the language and tools of thinking
- focusing on the connections between the teaching and the learning in each modeled example
- engaging teachers in a hands-on and very practical exploration of strategies that will stimulate their students to think more deeply and bring a greater depth of understanding and problem solving ability to their studies and their lives
