Writing for NAPLAN: Strategies to Improve Narrative Writing 2-7

In this workshop, participants thoroughly investigate the 10 criteria identified in the NAPLAN
marking grid. Teachers will be supported in their knowledge and understandings of the key
elements and features of narrative writing. They will be presented with strategies and practical
ideas for improving their students’ narrative writing.

Content Overview

Linking of the authorial and secretarial roles of the writer to the aspects of the writing process ie. planning, composing, revising, recording and publishing.
Strategies and practical ideas for the teaching and learning of the key elements identified in the
list below.

  1. Audience – capacity to orient, engage and affect the reader
  2. Text Structure - organisation into an appropriate and effective structure
  3. Ideas - creating, selecting and crafting ideas
  4. Characters - portrayal and development of character .Setting - development of a sense of time, place and atmosphere
  5. Vocabulary - range and precision of language choices
  6. Cohesion - control of multiple threads and relationship over the whole text
  7. Paragraph - segmenting of text
  8. Sentence Structure - production of grammatically correct, structurally sound and meaningful
    sentences
  9. Punctuation - use of correct and appropriate punctuation
  10. Spelling - accuracy of spelling and difficulty of words used
