Teaching Writing (P-3) One Day Workshop

This day specifically focuses on supporting P-3 teachers in implementing a structured approach to improving the writing of all students in their classroom. The authorial and secretarial roles of the writer are linked to the aspects of the writing process. A whole - part -whole approach to the teaching of writing is advocated using a continuum of support with the instructional approaches of Modelled, Shared, Guided, Interactive Writing and Language Experience. Ideas and strategies to engage students in the writing process are shared.

The authorial and secretarial roles of the writer

Planning:

•  Importance/purpose of planning
•  Teaching planning
•  Lesson ideas modelled

Composing:

•  Understanding and teaching composing
•  Ideas to improve composing

Revising:

•  Editing and proofreading
•  Conferencing- authorial and secretarial
•  Students editing their own work

Recording:

•  Discussions re: teaching spelling, punctuation, grammar etc.

Publishing:

•  Discussion  

The Instructional Approaches in the Writing Hour

Whole Class Focus on Writing:

•  Modelled Writing and Shared Writing
•  Many practical ideas shared

Small Group Focus on Writing:

•  Shared Writing, Interactive Writing, Guided Writing
•  Language Experience
•  Independent Writing - Roving Conferences

Text Types:

•  Purpose, Generic structure ,Language features, Grammar focus
