Thinking Skills Workshops
Thinking is often an assumed outcome of education but for many students the connection between teaching and learning remains unclear. Even if the concepts are understood, students may be unsure how they should process this information. They may not ‘see’ – i.e. not have the necessary tools and strategies to derive meaning from what is ‘seen’. What are they required to do with the information they have been taught? What are the expected outcomes and what level of thinking is required? How will the students ‘show what they know’ – provide evidence that they not only understand the concepts but can apply, analyse and evaluate the learning.
By being explicit about what is being taught and why and by providing frameworks to scaffold the type of thinking that is essential to the process, teachers can ensure that transfer takes place and that their students experience true and lasting ‘ownership’ of the learning.
